The first 5 Days: Day #4 - November 9th

This was the day Abi was suppose to come into the world, but instead it was the day they took out all of her tubes.  She was breathing more peacefully on her own and eating breast milk from a bottle.  I also was able to breast feed Abi for a little.  She was a good at latching from the beginning, but got tired very easily (from being jaundice and early).  Kyle was able to hold Abi for the first time as well.  Overlake was opening its new NICU facility on Monday, so they were starting the transition to new beds, etc.  Abi was transferred to a new bed and our nurse made her a special sign.  All of the NICU staff was absolutely wonderful and we couldn't have imagined being anywhere else.  We felt well informed and encouraged.  Being able to sit in on rounds and getting our many questions answered was extremely helpful.

November 9th also was the day that Kyle and I had to go home...without our daughter.  It was so hard to leave the hospital without her, but we felt some sense of peace knowing she was being watched and monitored around the clock.  We went back later that evening to feed her again, and it was hard to leave her again.

I also have to mention that none of this could have been accomplished without the help of my parents.  They flew up early from Palm Desert and stayed at our house to care for and play with Andy and Katie.  In fact, when Andy went to preschool the morning after Abi was born, his preschool teacher asked him if something exciting happened the night before.  He answered, "Yes, Ka and Bapa spent the night!"  Kyle and I both feel so blessed that both sets of grandparents love and adore our kids.  We are very fortunate.
