Andy had his 1st conference at Pre-K. We didn't know what to expect as all of his other conferences have been about how to fix his "hitting" tendencies and "aggressive" behavior. We went into our meeting with an open mind and were pleasantly surprised. Although Andy has some work to do on his fine motor skills - holding his pencil correctly, drawing within the lines, writing his name, writing letters - he has made some big improvements since the beginning of the year. I was impressed that the teacher has a journal that shows his progress, which was fun to see. It was like being a fly on the wall : )
Kyle and I were most proud of the report of Andy's emotional progress. He was labeled as "the most empathetic kid in the class." This is a far cry from where he was one year ago. Andy greets each kid in class and is aware when someone is missing or someone is having a bad day. When all of the kids were having a "high energy" day, one of the boys in his class started crying because no one would play with him. The teacher made an example out of Andy by showing how he responded by comforting the boy and announcing "I'll play with you!" Since we have been working hard on Andy's awareness of others' feelings, we felt quite proud of this report.
